4 Self-Care Strategies to Help You Make the Most of Summer Break

As our 2022-2023 school year winds down to a close in the coming days, teachers, faculty, staff, parents and students alike find themselves longing for a well-deserved summer break. Whether your summer will be filled wall-to-wall with activities or spent in full relaxation mode, we can all learn a thing or two about self-care as we take time to recharge and transition into the next school year.

Find Ways to Unplug

One of the most vital self-care strategies for teachers and staff is to find ways to unplug and disconnect from school-related responsibilities. This is something that can look different for everyone, and it all depends on the boundaries you are comfortable setting. We all know about a thing called "work-life balance," and while for much of the school year this could seem foreign to some, its important to make time for yourself over summer break to establish it.

Practice Mindfulness

Over the course of an entire school year, our bodies and minds undergo a great deal of stress. Its important to incorporate specific ways for you to unwind during the summer break. Practicing forms of mindfulness and relaxation will allow your mind to fully reset before even thinking about the next school year. Some great ways to practice these could be anything from meditation and breathing exercises, to yoga, or simply spending time in nature.

Connect with Your Loved Ones

Summer break offers a us a great way to connect with our loved ones more than during the school year. Make time to enjoy some quality family time, or even reach out to some friends who you may not get to see as often during the year. By making time for these connections, you will gain some great insight on your emotional well-being, as well as utilize that all-important support system around each and every one of us.

Transitioning to the Next Year

Many times, we see summer break as a way to get away from it all. While yes, it is a good time to take a break for yourself in many different aspects of your life, it also provides a bridge from one school year to the next, making it a good time to indulge in a little self-reflection.

Not right off the bat, but at some point this summer, take some time to reflect on some of your favorite successes from the past year. Come up with some personal and professional goals that you can instill in your mind as you begin to get ready for another great year, because we all know that once it starts it'll be halfway over before you know it!
